Heart and Arterial Health

Heart diseases is a term that refers to a group of conditions affecting the heart muscle and major arteries, and includes several types, such as:

  1. Atherosclerosis
  2. Cardiac Electrical disorders
  3. Cardiomyopathy
  4. Heart valve disease, including some congenital defects.

Here, we will discuss atherosclerosis in a bit more detail, as it is considered, according to statistics from the Ministries of Health in Gulf countries, the leading cause of death in both the Gulf region and the world. Deaths resulting from atherosclerosis account for between 25% and 45% of total deaths in some Gulf countries, a rate higher than that of cancer and traffic accidents.

One study on arterial diseases in Gulf countries showed that patients in the Gulf are younger than those in developed countries. This is mainly attributed to the prevalent lifestyle in the Gulf and the higher rates of metabolic syndrome, which lead to the development of diseases at an earlier age.

Heart and arterial health are essential factors in maintaining overall well-being and preventing chronic diseases. The heart plays a vital role in pumping blood to all parts of the body, so keeping it healthy is crucial. One of the main ways to prevent heart disease is by controlling its associated risk factors, which include certain chronic conditions, such as:

  1. High blood pressure
  2. Diabetes
  3. High cholesterol
  4. Kidney failure
  5. It also involves changing lifestyle habits, such as smoking and a lack of physical activity.

We always recommend maintaining a balanced diet that includes reducing the intake of saturated fats and sugars, and increasing the consumption of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. It is also advised to avoid foods high in sodium to help control blood pressure. Regular exercise plays an important role in promoting heart health, through activities such as brisk walking or swimming for at least 150 minutes per week. This not only helps improve heart performance but also lowers bad cholesterol levels in the blood.

To control blood pressure, it should be monitored regularly, along with maintaining a healthy lifestyle, avoiding smoking, and refraining from excessive alcohol consumption. It is also important to take prescribed medication regularly when necessary.

As for cholesterol levels, consuming foods rich in fiber, such as oats and fruits, can help lower bad cholesterol levels. In some cases, medication under medical supervision may be required to maintain healthy cholesterol levels.

By paying attention to these factors and following preventive advice, the risk of developing heart and arterial diseases can be reduced, helping to improve quality of life and maintain long-term heart health.
