Hysteroscopy

This article will help you learn about hysteroscopy and how to prepare for it.

What Is Hysteroscopy?

Hysteroscopy is an examination of the uterus using a scope to see inside the uterus and investigate any diseases or internal injuries.

When Is Hysteroscopy Performed?.

The hysteroscope is passed through the vagina and cervix (the entrance of the uterus), and it does not cause any internal injuries.

The procedure involves passing the scope into the vagina and cervix, without causing internal injuries.

  • Hysteroscopy is used to detect symptoms or problems such as:
  • Heavy menstrual bleeding.
  • Unusual vaginalbleeding.
  • Postmenopausal bleeding.
  • Pelvicpain.
  • Recurrent miscarriages.
  • Difficultyconceiving.
  • Diagnosing conditions such asfibroids and polyps (non-cancerousgrowths in the uterus).

Treating conditions and issues such as: removing fibroids, polyps, displaced intrauterine devices (IUDs), and intrauterine adhesions (scar tissue that causes absence of menstruation and reduced fertility).

How To Prepare for Hysteroscopy?

  • In the days and weeks leading up to hysteroscopy, the following may be advised:
  • Conduct tests to check if the patient can undergo the procedure, such as blood tests and pregnancy tests, which can be done about a week before the hysteroscopy appointment.
  • Use contraception; hysteroscopy cannot be performed if the patient is pregnant.
  • Quit smoking, since quitting before the procedure reduces the risk of complications from anesthesia.
  • If fibroids will be removed, the patient may be given medication to help shrink them beforehand.
  • The doctor may ask you to temporarily stop taking any medication that could increase the risk of bleeding during surgery.
  • Inform the doctor about any medications you are taking.
