What Is a Pap Smear?
A Pap smear is a preventive procedure conducted by taking a swab from the opening of the vagina (cervix). The test detects any changes in the cervical cells that may lead to cervical cancer. This test is not a treatment for cervical cancer but rather a preventive measure against it.
When Is a Pap Smear Performed?

How To Prepare for a Pap Smear?
- Two days before your Pap smear appointment, avoid:
- Any vaginal medications.
- Sexual intercourse.
Using creams or any products inside the vagina.
- Also, avoid the examination during:
- Menstrual periods.
- Pregnancy.
While planning for pregnancy.
Before starting the procedure, the doctor should explain what will happen during the test and answer any questions you may have.
- The procedure is performed:
- During the first routine visit after childbirth (usually 6 weeks postpartum).
- After completing treatment for vaginal discharge and pelvic infections.
After any miscarriage.
