What is a sebaceous cyst?
- It is a slow-growing, dome-shaped, yellow or white lump filled with protein that can move easily under the skin. True sebaceous cysts are rareand arise from sebaceous glands. They can form anywhere in the body except the palms of your hands and the soles of your feet.
- What are the symptomsof a sebaceous cyst?
- The main symptom of a sebaceous cyst is a small lump under the skin. The lumpis usually painless. However, in some cases, it may become inflamed and feel soft when touched.
- The skin over the cyst may be redand/or warm if the cyst is inflamed.
What causes sebaceous cysts?
Sebaceous cysts originate from sebaceous glands. They can develop if the gland or its duct is damaged or blocked. This usually occurs due to some type of trauma in the area such as a scratch, a surgical wound, or a skin condition like acne.:
- Cysts may also form due to genetic conditions such as basal cell nevus syndrome.
- What are the methods of diagnosis?
- The doctor will take a medical history and perform a physical examination. Additional procedures may be requested if necessary, such as:
1.CT scan.
2. Ultrasound to determine the contents of the cyst.
- 3. Biopsy, which involves removing a small amount of tissue from the cyst to be examined in the laboratory for signs of cancer.
- What are the methods of treatment for sebaceous cysts?
- Treatment is performed through several procedures or as needed, and may include the following:
- 1. Laser excision: the cyst is drained when the laser makes a small hole.
