What is Eye Removal Surgery?

It is a surgery performed by the doctor to remove the eye in cases of apainful blind eye, eye cancer, or after a severe injury or infection in the eye.

There are two main typesof eye removal surgery:

 

Enucleation: The entire eye is removed in an enucleation procedure. The muscles that control eye movement are left intact and are restitched to a spherical implant (artificial eyeball).

Evisceration: During evisceration, the cornea (the clear, dome-shaped window at the front of the eye) and the contents of the eye are removed. The white part of the eye (the scleral shell) and the eye muscles are left intact.

When is Eye Removal Surgery performed?

Eye removal (partial or complete) may be done in the following cases:

A blind eye that causes pain.

 

Eye cancer.

Severe eye injury or infection.

  • How do you prepare for Eye Removal Surgery?
  • Before surgery:
  • Tell your doctor about any health problems you have.
  • Your doctor will ask you to sign a consent form that gives permission for the procedure. Read the form carefully and ask questions if there is anything unclear.
  • You will be asked about the last time you ate. If the procedure requires anesthesia, you will be instructed not to eat or drink for 8 hours before the surgery.
  • Inform your doctor if you have any allergies to medications or anesthesia.
  • Tell your doctor about all medications (prescription, over-the-counter), vitamins, herbs, and dietary supplements you are taking.
  • Inform your doctor if you have a history of bleeding disorders, or if you are taking blood-thinning medications (anticoagulants), aspirin, or other drugs that affect blood clotting. You may be asked to stop these medications before the procedure.
