What Isthe MastectomyProcedure?

A mastectomy is a surgical procedure involving the complete removal of the breast as a treatment option for breast cancer. One or both breasts may be removed, depending on the case and the spread of malignant cancer cells.

When Is a Mastectomy Performed?

  • A doctor may suggest a mastectomy in the following situations:
  • Significant spread of malignant cancer cells in the breast.

Presence of malignant cancer cells in large parts of the breast.

In some cases, a mastectomy is performed as a preventive option, especially for those at high risk of developing breast cancer.

  • How Do You Prepare for a Mastectomy Procedure
  • Your healthcare provider will explain the procedure to you, and you may ask questions.
  • You will be required to sign a consent form granting permission for the procedure. Read the form carefully and ask questions if anything is unclear.
  • You will be asked about the last time you ate or drank anything. If the procedure is planned and requires general anesthesia, you will be asked not to eat or drink anything for eight hours prior to the procedure.
  • Inform your healthcare provider if you have any allergies to medication or anesthesia.
  • Tell your healthcare provider about all the medications (prescribed and over-the-counter), vitamins, herbs, and supplements you are taking.
  • Let your healthcare provider know if you have a history of bleeding disorders, or if you are taking any blood-thinning medications (anticoagulants), aspirin, or other drugs affecting blood clotting. You may be asked to stop these medications before the procedure.
