What is a prolactin test?
A prolactin test measures the level of the hormone prolactin in the blood. Prolactin is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland, a small gland located at the base of the brain. Prolactin plays a role in breast development and milk production. Its levels are usually elevated in pregnant women and new mothers, and lower in non-pregnant women and men.
When is a prolactin test performed?
Your doctor may request this test to:
- Diagnose a pituitary tumor.
- Help identify the cause of irregular menstrual cycles in women and/or infertility.
- Help identify the cause of unexpected milk production in the breasts of men or non-pregnant women.
- Help determine the cause of low sexual drive in men and/or erectile dysfunction.
How to prepare for a prolactin test
- Your doctor may ask you to take the test about three to four hours after waking. Prolactin levels vary throughout the day, but they are usually highest in the early morning.
- Inform your doctor about any medications you are taking, as some drugs can increase prolactin levels.
- Inform your doctor about any health problems you have.
