What Is Nasal Cauterization?
Nasal cauterization is a procedure that involves using a chemical swab, or electric current, to cauterize the inside of the nose. This aims to constrict the blood vessels when there is a nosebleed that cannot be controlled with simple measures, or topical medications.
When Is Nasal Cauterization Performed?
The nose is filled with small, and sensitive blood vessels that can be easily damaged, and bleed. Sometimes, the bleeding may originate from deep within the nose. Bleeding can occur after a blow to the head, undergoing nasal surgery, or if you are using blood thinners.
How to Prepare for Nasal Cauterization?
Nasal cauterization is a simple procedure, and there are certain considerations to be aware of before undergoing it:
The doctor will explain the procedure to you, and you can ask questions.
You must remove any jewelry in the nose before cauterization.
Inform the doctor if you are allergic to any medication, or type of anesthesia.
Tell the doctor about all the medications, (prescribed and over-the-counter), vitamins, herbs, and supplements you are taking.
Inform the doctor if you have a history of bleeding disorders, or if you are taking any blood-thinning medications, (anticoagulants), aspirin, or other drugs that affect blood clotting. The doctor may ask you to stop these medications before the cauterization.
Follow any other instructions provided by the doctor to prepare.
