What Is the Knee Replacement Procedure?

A knee replacement surgery is conducted with the aim of alleviating pain caused by arthritis, and knee injuries. People who require knee replacement surgery typically experience pain while moving, walking, ascending and descending stairs, and standing.

When Is Knee Replacement Surgery Performed?

Knee replacement is performed when non-surgical methods such as pain relievers, rehabilitation, weight loss, and others fail to alleviate severe pain resulting from knee joint arthritis.

A patient also requires knee replacement when damage or injury makes it difficult to move the knee joint.

How to Prepare for Knee Replacement Surgery?

Inform your doctor about any health issues you have.

Consult a physical therapist to understand necessary post-surgery instructions.

Ensure proper home care after the surgery.

Ensure a safe home environment post-surgery, such as preparing the patient's recovery area on the ground floor and providing a medical chair and footrest to elevate the leg.

Before the Surgery:

Your healthcare provider will explain the procedure, and you can ask questions.

You will be asked to sign a consent form that gives permission to perform the procedure; read the form carefully, and ask questions if anything is unclear.

You will be asked about the last time you ate or drank. If general anesthesia is required, you will be instructed not to eat or drink anything for 8 hours before the procedure.

Inform your healthcare provider if you have any allergies to medication, or anesthesia.

Inform your healthcare provider about all medications (prescription, over-the-counter), vitamins, herbs, and supplements you are taking.

Inform your healthcare provider if you have a history of bleeding disorders, or if you are taking any blood-thinning medications (anticoagulants), aspirin, or other drugs that affect blood clotting; you may be asked to stop these medications before the procedure.

You may be given medication to reduce acid in your stomach. These also help dry your mouth, and air passages.

Follow any other instructions given by your doctor for preparation.
