This article will help you learn about an iron and ferritin blood test and how to prepare for it.

What is the iron and ferritin blood test?

It measures the levels of ferritin in the blood, which is a protein that stores iron within the body's cells. Iron is an essential mineral in the production of red blood cells, which in turn transport oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body. Very low or very high iron levels can cause serious health problems.

Normal iron levels:

  • Men: 24 to 336 micrograms per deciliter (mcg/dL)
  • Women: 11 to 307 micrograms per deciliter (mcg/dL)

When is the iron and ferritin blood test needed?

You need to have the test if you experience symptoms of very low or very high iron levels.

Symptoms of low iron levels:

  • Pale skin
  • Fatigue and exhaustion
  • Weakness and dizziness
  • Shortness of breath
  • Rapid heartbeat

Symptoms of high iron levels:

  • Joint pain
  • Abdominal pain
  • Low energy
  • Unintentional weight loss

How to prepare for the iron and ferritin blood test?

  • Your doctor may ask you to fast (not eat or drink) for 12 hours before the test. The test is usually conducted in the morning.
  • Inform your doctor about any health issues you are currently experiencing.
