This article will help you learn about Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and how to prepare for it.

What is ERCP?

Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is a procedure used to diagnose and treat problems of the pancreas and bile ducts. It combines X-ray imaging and endoscopy to remove stones or tumors.

When is ERCP Performed?

ERCP is often performed to treat or diagnose problems of the pancreas or bile ducts that can cause abdominal pain. Conditions in which ERCP may be used include:

  • Narrowing of the bile duct due to stones, tumors, or congenital blockage.
  • Removal or fragmentation of gallstones.
  • Diagnosis of conditions such as:
    • Primary cholangitis.
    • Primary sclerosing cholangitis.
    • Taking tissue samples (biopsy) to diagnose tumors in the pancreas, bile ducts, or gallbladder.

How to Prepare for ERCP?

Before the procedure:

  • You will be asked to sign a consent form granting permission for the procedure. Read the form carefully and ask questions if anything is unclear.
  • You will be asked about the last time you ate. If the procedure requires anesthesia, you will be instructed not to eat or drink for 8 hours before the procedure.
  • Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or think you might be pregnant.
  • Inform your doctor if you have any allergies to medications or anesthesia.
  • Inform your doctor about all medications you are taking (prescribed, over-the-counter), as well as vitamins, herbal supplements, and dietary supplements.
  • Inform your doctor if you have a history of bleeding disorders, or if you are taking blood thinners (anticoagulants), aspirin, or other medications that affect blood clotting. You may be asked to stop these medications before the procedure.
  • You may be given medication to reduce stomach acid, which also helps dry secretions in your mouth and airways.
  • Follow any other instructions your doctor provides to prepare for the procedure.
