When does a sprain occur?

A sprain is an injury to the ligamentous tissues—the tissues that connect bones and stabilize joints. A sprain can occur while exercising or playing sports, or it can result from a fall or a forceful collision.

What are the symptoms of a sprain?

  • Pain or weakness in the affected area.
  • Swelling and bruising in the affected area.
  • Difficulty or inability to walk.
  • Muscle spasms.

In most cases, sprains do not require X-rays to diagnose.

How to manage a sprain?

  • Stop any exercise or activity and try to rest.
  • Apply an ice pack to the injured area for up to 20 minutes every 2 to 3 hours.
  • Wrap a bandage around the injured area to provide support.
  • Elevate it on a pillow as much as possible.

Seek emergency medical help if any of the following occur:

  • The injured area does not show improvement after treatment.
  • The pain or swelling worsens.
  • You experience a fever or chills.
  • There is an inability to walk due to intense pain.
