Considering the depth of the problem, we find that there are many reasons behind the phenomenon of food waste in the GCC countries, including but not limited to:

  • Culture of excessive consumption: The prevailing culture of consumption in the region contributes to purchasing large amounts of food that exceed the actual needs of individuals and families, leading to increased waste.
  • Excess during occasions and holidays: During religious and social occasions and holidays, large quantities of food are prepared that exceed actual needs, and the surplus is often discarded.
  • Lack of awareness about the importance of food: Limited awareness of the true value of food and how to preserve it contributes to not appreciating the importance of consuming responsibly.
  • Abundance and easy access to food: The availability of food at affordable prices in the Gulf countries reduces its perceived value among consumers, which encourages waste.

With the increasing amounts of food waste, the methods of disposal also become more strained, leading to a higher demand for landfills to manage these materials. Consequently, food-related waste disposal methods result in several environmental problems, including:

  • Wasting natural resources: Food production requires large amounts of water, energy, and agricultural land; therefore, food waste means wasting these valuable resources.
  • Increased greenhouse gas emissions: The decomposition of wasted food produces greenhouse gases such as methane, contributing to climate change and global warming.
  • Soil and water pollution: Disposing of wasted food in landfills can lead to soil and groundwater contamination.
  • Loss of biodiversity: Intensive agriculture for food production threatens biodiversity and leads to land degradation.

To prevent the problem from worsening, it is necessary to implement quick solutions over short periods, as well as long-term solutions that aim to change behaviors and improve the management of wasted food by adopting modern methods and approaches. There are many proposed solutions to reduce food waste, which mainly focus on awareness, planning, and behavioral change.

  • Raising awareness: Efforts should be intensified to raise awareness about the importance of consuming food responsibly and the negative effects of food waste on the environment and society. This can be achieved through media campaigns, awareness programs, and workshops.
  • Proper planning: This includes careful planning of shopping lists, preparing appropriate amounts of food, and storing food correctly to preserve it for longer periods.
  • Education: The topic of responsible food consumption should be included in school curricula at various educational levels to instill this value in future generations.
  • Supporting initiatives: Initiatives aimed at collecting surplus food from restaurants, hotels, and supermarkets and distributing it to those in need should be supported.
  • Encouraging sustainable agriculture: Sustainable farming practices should be promoted to reduce water and energy waste, preserve soil, and increase productivity.
  • Adjusting packaging policies: Companies can be encouraged to use smaller or recyclable packaging.
  • Revising expiration dates: Standards for determining expiration dates can be reconsidered, as much edible food is discarded due to short expiration dates.
  • Developing new apps and technologies: Applications can be developed to help consumers manage their food inventory and plan their meals.

In conclusion, food waste poses a direct threat to the environment and contributes to the worsening of many global environmental problems, such as climate change, water scarcity, and land degradation. Moreover, it represents a significant challenge in the Gulf countries and requires the combined efforts of governments, institutions, and individuals to reduce it. By taking effective measures, we can preserve our natural resources and minimize our environmental impact.
