This topic will help you learn about coronary artery bypass grafting and how to prepare for it.
What is coronary artery bypass grafting? Coronary artery bypass grafting is a surgical procedure that restores blood flow to areas of the heart that are not receiving enough blood. This surgery can improve heart function, especially when a has occurred or if there is an increased risk of having one in the near future.
When is coronary artery bypass surgery performed? When the tissues in your body do not receive enough blood flow due to clots or narrowing in the coronary arteries of the heart, this causes a problem called ischemia, which may lead to death.
How do you prepare for coronary artery bypass surgery?
Your doctor will explain the procedure and how to prepare for it, and you may ask questions.
You will be asked to sign a consent form that gives permission to perform the procedure. Read the form carefully and ask questions if anything is unclear.
You will need to undergo several tests to determine whether it is safe for you to have this surgery and whether you need the surgery in the first place or not.
You will be asked about the last time you ate or drank anything. If general anesthesia is required, you will be asked not to eat or drink anything for 8 hours before the procedure.
Tell your healthcare provider if you are allergic to any medication or anesthesia.
Tell your healthcare provider about all medications (prescription and over-the-counter), vitamins, herbs, and supplements you are taking.
Tell your healthcare provider if you have a history of bleeding disorders or if you are taking any blood-thinning medications (anticoagulants), aspirin, or other drugs that affect blood clotting. You may be asked to stop these medications before the procedure.
Your healthcare provider will explain the type of assistance you will need at home, what you can and cannot eat after the surgery, and will also include instructions on how to bathe and take care of yourself before the procedure.
Follow any other instructions your doctor gives you to prepare.
