What Is Ear Irrigation?

Ear irrigation is a quick and painless medical procedure that uses a small electric pump to flush water, or a syringe containing water, into the ear to clean out accumulated earwax.

When Is Ear Irrigation Performed?

Ear irrigation is usually performed when there is a buildup of wax inside the ear that affects hearing.

How Do You Prepare for Ear Irrigation?

It is preferable to do the following at least 7 days before undergoing ear irrigation:

  • Use ear drops to dissolve the wax and moisten the accumulated wax. When applying the drops, lie down on the unaffected ear for 5-10 minutes. If both ears are affected, alternate between ears on different days.
  • When sleeping, lie down on the unaffected ear and keep the affected ear facing upward.

Inform the doctor immediately if you have:

  • Hearing loss.
  • Ear pain.
  • Dizziness or vertigo.
  • Previous ear and eardrum problems.
  • Inform the doctor about any health issues you are experiencing.
