What Is a Thyroidectomy Procedure?

Thyroidectomy is a surgical procedure in which the thyroid gland is either partially or completely removed as a treatment option for certain diseases, such as thyroid cancer. The extent of the removal depends on the underlying cause. If the entire thyroid is removed, the patient will need lifelong treatment to replace the hormones produced by the thyroid gland.

When Is Thyroidectomy Performed?

  • A doctor may suggest thyroidectomy as a treatment option for certain diseases or conditions, such as:
  • Thyroid cancer.
  • An enlarged thyroid gland ifthe enlargement causes severe complications.
  • Hyperactive thyroid that cannot be treated with medication.

How to Prepare for Thyroidectomy

  • Before the procedure, the following tests are essential for evaluating the thyroid:CT scan.

  • Ultrasound.
  • In some cases, the doctor may perform a biopsy for examination.

Adherence to prescribed medications.

  • Before the Procedure:
  • Your healthcare provider will explain the procedure, and you may ask questions.
  • You will be required to sign a consent form granting permission for the procedure. Read the form carefully and ask questions if there is something unclear.
  • You will be asked about the last time you had food or drink. If the procedure is planned, general anesthesia will be used, and you will be instructed not to eat or drink anything for eight hours before the procedure.
