Glucose Tolerance Test (GTT)
This scientific article will help you understand the glucose tolerance test, and how to prepare for it.
What IsGTTa GlucoseOGTTTolerance Test?
The Glucose Tolerance Test (GTT), also known as the Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT), is a method used to diagnose diabetes or insulin resistance.
When Is the Glucose Tolerance Test Conducted?
The test is used to determine whether the body has difficulty reducing the sugar/carbohydrate level in the body (insulin resistance).
- The patient is required to consume a glucose drink, and blood glucose levels are measured before and at intervals after consuming the sugary drink. This test helps diagnose the following conditions:
- Prediabetes.
- Gestational diabetes in pregnant women.
- Insulin resistance.
Reactive hypoglycemia, (repeated episodes of low blood sugar).
- How to Prepare for a Glucose Tolerance Test?
- Your healthcare provider will explain the procedure to you, and you can ask questions.
- Before the test, you should refrain from eating or drinking certain fluids for 8 to 12 hours prior to the test, and avoid taking certain medications. It is therefore advisable to inform your doctor about any medications you are taking.
- For the test itself, a blood sample will be taken first, provided that you are fasting before the test, in order to measure the blood glucose level. The next stage is to consume the glucose drink.
