Nosebleed (Epistaxis)
This page will help you prepare and act appropriately to manage a nosebleed or epistaxis.
When Does a Nosebleed Occur?
Epistaxis is a common medical condition that often occurs when dry air causes the blood vessels inside the nose to rupture. The bleeding can range from light drops that stop on their own to severe bleeding requiring immediate medical attention.
There are several causes for a nosebleed, including:
- Nose picking.
- Colds and sinus infections.
- Frequent and continuous sneezing.
- Forceful nose blowing.
- Inhaling irritating chemicals, such as cleaning agents.
- Excessive use of nasal sprays.
- Some health issues, likehigh blood pressure..
- Certain medications, such as isotretinoin (Roaccutane) or blood thinners like aspirin.
How to Manage a Nosebleed?
- Rest.
- Begin by sitting upright and leaning slightly forward to reduce blood pressure in the nasal vessels. Avoid lying down or tilting the head backward, as this might cause swallowing blood and vomiting.
- Breathe through your mouth.
- Pinch both sides of the soft part of the nose, even if the bleeding is coming from only one nostril.
- Apply pressure for at least five minutes in children; for adults, 10 to 15 minutes in adults.
- Do not release the pressure before the recommended time has passed..
- You can apply cold compresses to help constrict blood vessels.
Visit the emergency room if the bleeding does not stop after 30 minutes of pressure.
You Should Go to the Emergency Room:
- If the bleeding is severe and causes difficulty in breathing.
- If you feel tired and pale.
- If the bleeding persists and does not stop even after first aid.
- If the person has facial swelling and has experienced bleeding.
- If the person is taking blood-thinning medications like aspirin, and the bleeding does not stop.
- If nosebleeds occur repeatedly, or when bruising appears on the body, and the current bleeding does not stop.
- If the bleeding is severe and the person experiences chest pain or feels dizzy.
