On this page, you will find everything youGTDneed to know about gestational trophoblastic disease.

What is gestationaltrophoblastic disease?

Gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD) is a group of tumors that start in the uterus and are associated with pregnancy. These tumors begin from cells called trophoblasts, which normally develop into the placenta during pregnancy.

  • The placenta is the organ that connects the unborn baby to the uterus and provides oxygen and nutrients necessary for growth. In GTD, the trophoblast cells (placenta-like cells) grow abnormally instead of forming a healthy placenta.
  • Types of gestational trophoblastic disease:
  • Hydatidiform mole (molar pregnancy): Most cases occur early in pregnancy, shortly after the sperm fertilizes the egg.
  • Persistent/invasive molar pregnancy.PSTT).
  • Choriocarcinoma.ETT).

Placental site trophoblastic tumor (PSTT).

  • Epithelioid trophoblastic tumor (ETT).
  • What are the symptoms of gestational trophoblastic disease?
  • Irregular vaginal bleeding or bleeding unrelated to menstruation.
  • Uterus larger than expected for the stage of pregnancy.
  • Abdominal or pelvic pain.
  • Nausea or vomiting earlier than usual in pregnancy.

High blood pressure or swelling in the hands and feet early in pregnancy.

Prolonged vaginal bleeding after delivery or miscarriage.

What causes gestational trophoblastic disease?

The exact cause is unknown. In cases of molar pregnancy, the fertilization process is abnormal. The embryodoes not develop properly, and the trophoblast cells grow into tumors instead of forming a healthy placenta.

  • How is it diagnosed?
  • The doctor will take a medical history and perform a physical examination. Additional procedures may be required as needed, such as:
  • Pelvic exam.
  • Ultrasound.CT Scan).
  • Blood tests.MRI).

Chest X-ray.:

  • How is gestational trophoblastic disease treated?
  • Treatment depends on the type and extent of the disease and may include:
  • Surgery.
  • Chemotherapy.

Radiation therapy.

Hysterectomy (surgical removal of the uterus).

How can gestational trophoblastic Disease be prevented?

There is no specific way to prevent gestational trophoblastic disease.

What are the complications of gestational trophoblastic Disease?

One of the most serious complications is severe bleeding and anemia caused by a molar pregnancy.
