What is Pediculosis?

  • There are three types of lice that affecthumans: body lice, head lice, and pubic lice.
  • Body lice are small, flat insects (parasites) thatlive on the body and feed on blood.
  • Life stages ofbody lice:

 

Nits (eggs): Oval, yellow or white in color, very small and often hard to see on the skin. They are more likely found in the seams of clothing. Nits hatch within 1 to 2 weeks.

Nymphs: These are immature lice (singular: louse) that hatch from the nits. Nymphs are smaller than adults but mature into adults after feeding on blood for 9 to 12 days.

  • Adults: Adult lice are yellow-gray or reddish-brown in color and about the size of a sesame seed. Female lice are usually larger than males and can lay more than 300 eggs during their lifetime. Body lice live only about 20 days. Without feeding on blood, they die within 1–2 days. Unlike head lice and pubic lice, Body lice do not live on the body. They live and reproduce in clothing , where they reproduce.

  • Uncomfortable sensations on the skin.
  • Itching and skin irritation.

 

Clusters of small, discolored bites (red, purple, or brown).

What causes pediculosis?

Sharing clothing, bedding, towels, or linens with someone who has body lice.

How is it diagnosed?:

  • A physician will take a medical history and perform a physical examination. Additional tests may be requested if necessary.
  • How is pediculosis treated?
  • Treatment may include several measures, depending on the situation, such as:
  • Regular bathing with soap and warm water.
  • Washing clothes, bedding, and linens.
  • If washing is not possible, placing items in a sealed plastic bag for at least two weeks can also be effective.
  • In some cases, a doctor may prescribe:

 

Oral antiparasitic medications.

Topical antiparasitic treatments (lotions, creams, or shampoos).

 

Antihistamines or corticosteroids to reduce itching.

  • You can prevent body lice infestation by bathing and washing clothing, bedding, and other personal items at least once a week.
