What Is Eye Dryness?

Eye dryness usually occurs when your tears are inadequate to provide sufficient moisture to your eyes. People often describe dry eyes as an uncomfortable feeling in the eyes. Tears may be insufficient or unstable for various reasons.

What Causes Eye Dryness?

  • You may be more prone to dry eyes if:
  • You are 50 years old or older. As you age, your body’s ability to produce tears diminishes.

You are a woman. Hormonal changes during pregnancy and menopause (when menstrual cycles stop) can affect your body’s ability to produce tears.

  • Other causes of dry eyes include:
  • Medications: Dry eyes can be a side effect of certain medications used to treat conditions such as colds, allergies, depression, and high blood pressure.
  • Health problems: Specific health issues—such as diabetes, thyroid disorders, and autoimmune diseases like lupus—can cause dry eyes.
  • Laser eye surgery: Some types of laser surgery can cause dryness. Ask your ophthalmologist how long this side effect typically lasts, and inform them if you have any questions or concerns.
  • Windy or dry environments: Spending time in such environments can cause your tears to evaporate more quickly, leading to dry eyes.

Staring at screens for extended periods: You may blink less when looking at computer or tablet screens, which can lead to dry eyes.

  • Blink frequently or close your eyes for a few seconds while working, reading, or doing other long tasks that strain your eyes.
  • Wear sunglasses even when it doesn’t seem necessary, as they block UV rays and protect your eyes from wind and other dry air.
  • Use moisturizing eye drops as needed.
  • Use a humidifier to add moisture to the dry air in your home.
  • Avoid blowing air directly into your eyes.
  • Avoid environments that are unusually dry, such as deserts, airplanes, and high-altitude.

Avoid smoking.

If you experience persistent dryness or additional symptoms, consult your doctor for diagnosis and treatment options.

When Should You See a Doctor?

  • Consult your doctor if you experience dry eyes along with any of the following symptoms:
  • Severe irritation or pain
  • Severe headache
  • Nausea
  • Eye discharge containing blood or pus
  • Blurred vision
  • Eye redness
  • Sensitivity to light
