Everything You Need to Know About Keratosis pilaris.

What is Keratosis pilaris?

Keratosis pilaris, also known as “chicken skin” or “goose skin,” is a benign skin condition that appears as small, rough bumps. These bumps are made up of excess keratin, a protein that helps form hair, nails, and the outer layer of the skin (the epidermis). The bumps can be red, brown, white, or match the color of the skin.

  • What Are the Symptoms of Keratosis pilaris?
  • The main symptom of keratosis pilaris is the appearance of patches of small, rough, and sometimes discolored bumps on the skin, which resemble the dotted surface of a strawberry. Additional symptoms may include:
  • Itching or dry skin, especially on the back of the upper arms, thighs, or buttocks.
  • Irritation of the bumps, leading to increased pigmentation and a more prominent appearance.

Rough texture in the affected areas.

Worsening of the bumps in dry weather, such as during the winter months.

What Causes Keratosis pilaris?

The exact cause of keratosis pilaris is unknown, but it is believed that the bumps form due to a buildup of keratin that clogs the hair follicles. Dry skin may increase the likelihood of developing this condition, and it often worsens in winter due to low humidity levels, while symptoms may improve during the summer.

  • How is Keratosis pilaris Diagnosed?
  • Diagnosis typically involves a medical history review and a physical examination. In some cases, the physician may order additional tests, such as:

Allergy testing

Skin biopsy

  1. How is Keratosis pilaris Treated?
  1. There is no permanent cure for keratosis pilaris, and the condition often improves on its own over time. However, treatment can help manage the symptoms and may include:
  • Frequent moisturizing with over-the-counter medical creams to relieve dryness
  • Topical exfoliants to improve texture and appearance, containing ingredients like:
  • Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs)
  • Glycolic acid
  • Lactic acid

Salicylic acid

  1. Urea

These products are not recommended for young children, pregnant women, nursing mothers, or those who may become pregnant.

In some cases, laser therapy may be used to treat redness and inflammation, though it is not a permanent solution.

How Can Keratosis Pilaris Be Prevented?

There is no guaranteed way to prevent keratosis pilaris, but certain measures can help minimize symptoms or prevent them from worsening, such as:

Regular moisturizing

Avoidingskindrynessandirritation

What Are the Complications of Keratosis pilaris?

Keratosis pilaris is not painful, but it can cause emotional discomfort, especially due to the visible bumps that may affect self-esteem. The discoloration and rough texture around hair follicles can be bothersome to some individuals.

When Should You See a Doctor?

  • You’re unsure whether the symptoms are due to keratosis pilaris or another skin condition, such as eczema, psoriasis, allergies, or fungal, infections
